Garden Taking Shape And Other Projects

Garden – My garden is taking shape. Every year it gets a little better. I’ve really fine tuned the seed starting process with a timed grow station in the basement. I’ve carved out a lot of space in the backyard, having purchased a roto-tiller. I still haven’t figured out the timing yet. Every year it really sneaks up on me and I realize that I don’t have anything setup. I start my seeds too late. I don’t get the ground prepped in time. When I have a chance it rains non-stop, or we’re out for three weekends in a row. I can’t find starter beds anywhere (thanks COVID!) It is kind of frustrating. I’m finding I need to just setup up automatic reminders so by April 1st I have my starter beds in place and tomato plants growing. By May 1st everything in the ground.

This year I forgot to water and my pepper plants all died. I did get the tomatoes in. I just put in the squash. I never got the salad or herb beds ready. I also didn’t get any flower beds ready so the Zinnia and Marigolds will go to waste. The sunflowers didn’t go in either.

I did buy a rabbit trap and I have some deer repellent on the way. I’m seeing that because I use a hose instead of a sprinkler I’ve seen less deer. I think when it gets really hot like it does they can smell water and that brings them into my yard. By wrapping up the hose when I’m done watering I am finding that maybe they don’t want to be in my yard as much. I also saw a dead rabbit in my yard that was gone the next day (my guess, owl?)

Gardening is so much fun. It is the only way to get a bunch of good produce. I have sixty tomatoes in the yard right now – by the end of this summer I will be inundated with them. Hopefully next year I can carve out flower space. My house sits in a weird spot where my backyard gets blasted with sunlight and my front yard only gets it in the morning, while one side gets hardly any at all. Maybe if I buy a new house I will insist that it’s built facing due north so my front and backyard get equal amounts of sunlight.

By the way, we now have poison hemlock in the area. Below is a picture of it that I saw near a parking lot for a local restaurant.

Apple Arcade Gaming – I turned my old iPhone 8 into a dedicated handheld gaming device. I love handheld gaming whether it be mobile or Nintendo. I might get the Steam Deck one day, and possibly a 3DS for myself since my sons are always on it. I still have Zelda BOTW to play on there, and I really want to play the new Metroid game also.
