Cub Scout Derby, Tae Kwon Do

Cub Scout Derby, Tae Kwon Do

The Cub Scout Derby was a success. Next year I will be running this show so I was paying close attention to the happenings. First off, we will need someone available who can fix derby cars as they come in to get weighed. Perhaps we can circumvent this by better communicating what the cars should be like, just some rules to save time. This would be beyond weight and would include the requirement that all four wheels touch the track, it fits within a certain slot, and there is clearance on the bottom. The last is what really screwed people up honestly and what I had to fix the most. I wasn’t expecting to repair so many as all I had was my multi-tool. Next time around I’ll probably need a full set up screwdrivers and possibly a cordless drill.

A former CubMaster from earlier in the pack was there and he will continue to help with the electronics and racing. They use a custom software and electronic sensors to calculate n average MPH to decide the winner which isn’t the best way to decide but oh well. I’d think the fastest run would be best. The track is in good shape and looks to be hand made from some years ago. It can continue being used, I didn’t see any reason to replace it. There is some setup involved and I didn’t get a chance to see that done because of the chaos of the event. That is probably the last part I will focus on – clear communication and organization. T’s car ran OK, I think we’ll work on the angle of the wheels next year. It is a fast car but there are faster right now.

Finally the family’s Tae Kwon Do adventure continues to be a positive experience for all three of them. They are on their way to be black belts. I still have no plans to join. I have enough time commitments I can’t really take on another. My time commitment outside of this would be the Dutchman’s probably. They do lots of family stuff and I can participate in all the cool stuff there anyway like poker tournaments, trap shooting events, fishing and archery events and hunting. Their family stuff is pretty great though and really out of the park. They make July 4th, Christmas and a fall camping weekend terrific and really family focused. Going forward I will just be cheering them on at Tae Kwon Do tournaments and being supportive in that way.
