Gamer: Rocket League

Gamer: Rocket League

I picked up my copy of Rocket League as I do most of my games, because I heard great things about it and the price during a seasonal Steam sale was too good to pass up. The concept of the game is quite interesting, and whenever I explain the theme to others I get a look of incredulity that anyone would think such a thing is worthwhile. But it is, it totally is.

Rocket League is a soccer game played using cars that defy gravity, boosting themselves through the air to accomplish acrobatic feats. The cars themselves are highly customizable with the addition of paint jobs, rims, car toppers, and vapor trails. What makes the game so compelling is that no one car has an advantage over the other, meaning that skill is of utmost importance. Once you get the hang of of dribbling, shooting, passing, and making stops there’s no real limit to how far you can go. Couple this with the large online community still playing it and there’s a lot of variety to be had. I am probably a middling skilled player, but because you get skill mixed with other players and the ball movement is really dynamic, I can still win a game here and there.

Rocket League for this exercise became my first uploaded gaming video to YouTube. I utilized the X-Box Game Bar that comes pre-installed with Windows 10 as my recording tool. I didn’t offer any commentary like many broadcasters offer, just a 10 minute look at a match I played where I scored two goals (and probably assisted the competition in a few others). Given that I also have a massive second hard drive to save video to I can record as much as I want as well.

I look forward to recording more gaming videos to YouTube. I hope they can be helpful keeping me on track with a game given how little time I get to play. There are also memorable moments in games that are fun to reminisce over and only accessible if you play the game. I really wish I had recorded my Mad Max game play given how crazy some of that ended up being. I will probably replay some of the games I have a few hours in, like Batman Arkham Asylum and Grand Theft Auto.
