Training, Cub Scouts, Soccer Coaching

Training – I am now weight lifting pretty regularly during the week. I tend to go during lunchtime and get about 45 minutes in. There is a terrific private gym minutes from my house. The equipment is well maintained and the gym is kept very clean. I am mostly hammering on the bench press, with weight dips and curling. Yes, the “glory muscles” but there will be time for training other muscle groups later. Right now I am just working on my chest, arms, and legs. Squatting so far is my favorite exercise. Everyone should squat, it helps your legs stay strong and gives you a lot of stability. I am also a fan of calf raises too, both of which stretch out the tendons in my feet. I’m working through a form of plantar fasciitis right now, especially in my heels. The squat press seems to stretch them out and give me some relief. It’s been an ongoing struggle so far, keeping my feet in shape, and a piece of me is worried that this is a lifetime problem. I will most likely talk to the doctor next about stretches and what I can do to make it better.

Cub Scouts – Our second Cub Scout camp out. Again, we did not stay, and I drove home when it got late. I just need some time to get back into the camping mindset. For many years I used to “rough it” but I’m at a point in my life when a good night’s rest is the most important part of my day to day. I am a practitioner of sleep hygiene and I have a hold regiment that I need to make sure I can sleep. This is from years of under sleeping and I don’t want to be tired anymore.

The Cub Scouts so far is fun. I am having enough success during the monthly meetings with my Wolf group. I have a great group of boys who try really hard. They are really excited about their scouting adventure. Right now I am the assistant pack master and I kind of struggle with it honestly. The overall group is kind of a “fly by the seat of the pants” type of operation and if you know me, you know that is not how I operate. I love planning and order and knowing the answer to questions. Eventually I will be pack master and I’ll need to step up and make sure things are getting done.

Soccer Coaching – I am my son’s U4 team coach and my other son’s U8 assistant coach for soccer this year. It’s been a lot of fun. The three year olds admittedly wear me out and it’s been a struggle getting them to participate but eventually they got on board. The U8 team’s been a blast watching them develop and get excited about their games. I really like coaching them, it’s been exceedingly rewarding. I don’t think I’ll do much more coaching though. Sports parents are the worst and I honestly don’t feel like dealing with it. Plus, I have the Cub Scouts and that’s enough time commitment in a month anyway. I will see how I feel in the fall and go from there.
