Archery Tournament, Cincinnati Zoo, Scary Movie
Archery Tournament
We kicked off the weekend with an Archery Tournament for Ted. He competed with multiple schools at Boone County High School. He did pretty well, and was super stoked afterward about it. I ended up setting a target in the yard this week so he got some practice in. I hope this becomes something he feels good about doing. Afterwards we took him to FireHouse Subs so he could try a Philly Steak sandwich. He really enjoyed it (I thought the food was good too).
Cincinnati Zoo Visit
A great visit to the Zoo. It is the first weekend of the month which means it is the place to be. We didn’t make it here in January. We decided not to go that first weekend because we were kind of beat being in the cold for two long days while in Pigeon Forge. There’s not much to report here. I tried the Gyro sandwich and it was OK. Note – they serve Grippo’s Barbecue Chips if you’re in the mood for some.
Scary Movies
I do not watch a lot of movies, in fact I do not watch a lot of television in general. I tend to use what little time I have in the week on really targeted media consumption. I decided to catch up on some horror movies on a streaming service. I chose a few based on pop culture relevance and whether or not they have sequels. The first one, “The Terrifier”, was probably the grossest thing I’ve seen in my life. I had trouble sitting through it, and there were times I wanted to turn it off because how stupid it seemed, but by the end I was like “uh this is kind of crazy” and I changed my mind about it. I won’t watch it again but it’s not as bad as I thought. The second movie is “Smile”. Wow, this was a good horror flick. I’ll admit, by the end I was tired of having another jump scare, but I realized each one got me, at least judging by the goosebumps.
Also, WWE’s Royal Rumble this year was superb. The timing of the entrants couldn’t have been any better. This is my favorite WWE pay-per-view. We ended up watching it at a family get together Saturday night. Nobody there watches WWE so it was fun to share it with them. I probably came across as a big dork, but honestly, what else is new?
Focuses
I started using an app called Stoic again. I used it for about a year and then stopped because I deprioritized using it. It is a simple app, it offers you a prompt and you answer the question, usually it is personal in nature and designed to encourage you to reflect. There is an AI layered assistant but I did not opt to utilize it as they wanted another $60 a year for it. I’m not quite ready to visit a virtual shrink, I’m just looking for some thought provoking questions that I can answer in a minute or two and that will provide some much needed insights. The app also offers some meditation and breathing exercises, although I only use the latter. I came back to the app because as someone who journals regularly I wanted to deep dive my day to day rather than just record the day’s mundane events. I chose this app because it’s affiliated with Ryan Holiday. He wrote a book I read for a year called the “Daily Stoic”, which was a daily text from a Stoic writer (Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius) with an insight about it. I found that book helpful.
