Cincinnati Zoo, Putz Ice Cream

Visit to Cincinnati Zoo

We took another trip to the Cincinnati Zoo. We are keeping up with my goal of visiting the zoo once a month every month of the year. August is always a busy month at the zoo, especially with company picnics and what not and the animals usually aren’t too active because of the heat. That is why it is important to get here in the mornings before it gets too warm. We did visit the P&G Learning Center, which was the first time we’ve done that in awhile. It is a large greenhouse type enclosure that is dedicated to the resources that can be found in nature, like medicine or flavoring components. This is also home of the zoo’s sloth and that is definitely one of my favorite creatures. He was totally “slothing” it up in his little enclosure so we didn’t get much of a gander at him.

Construction on the elephant enclosure looks to be progressing and those big fellas are going to enjoy that space for sure. I remember visiting that side of the zoo many years ago when it was a parking lot and a second gate. How much the zoo has changed in the years since those days is absolutely incredible. I can’t wait to see what it will look like in the future, especially when the new bear hill exhibit is completed. I also think the clear winner here on this trip was Jungle Trails, which the boys enjoyed quite a bit.

Visit to Putz Ice Cream

Our favorite ice cream shack is Putz off Rybolt Road. I passed this little food stand for years on the expressway and decided to stop in one day out of curiosity and fell in love with it. The soft-serve here is top notch. They also server hot food including a foot long cheese coney. I am a sucker for vanilla malts (extra malt please). In the area, I would probably put Putz as best on the west side with Starlite in Amelia as best on the east side. I am glad we could visit before the end of the season (they close Labor Day weekend). We are always bummed when we can’t make it over here so we try to couple our summer zoo trip with a stop here on the way home.
