Cub Scout Planning Weekend, Join Scouting Night
Cub Scout Planning Weekend
I hosted Pack 808’s leadership planning session at Dutchman’s Rod and Gun Club. I am transitioning out from pack leadership after this year, and wanted one good get together with these leaders before that happened. I look forward to supporting them in any way I can, but also optimistic about getting involved with scouts at the troop level also. These types of leadership retreats are paramount to working things out and getting the next year’s calendar and budget figured out. I am a big proponent of the one page calendar, it gets everyone on the same page and the parents absolutely love it. The budget also helps quantify the program and makes sure we deliver on our mission. You really can’t get the budget worked out until the calendar gets created, but the calendar is also limited by how much you can fundraise too, so there is a bit of coordination to figure out.
I am going to sit down and work out how scouting’s changed my approach to leadership and what it’s taught me. These last few years working with youth, other parents, and making sure I am trained to provide scouts a good experience, because “every scout deserves a well trained leader”, changed me in a way that will be with me for the rest of my life.
Join Scouting Night
We hosted scouts for our Join Scouting Night (JSN) at a local park with the Independence Fire Department. I love when IFD comes out and hangs out with our scouts. We like to put them up in the parking lot and let the scouts ask them questions about what’s on their fire truck and what it’s like to be a fireman. The firemen also let them shoot water from the fire engine. We also supply the scouts with squirt guns and buckets of water and let them play together. Meanwhile we gather the parents together and talk to them about scouting and the next school year. I did not need to speak this year as I’ve transitioned that over to the new leaders. It is a good opportunity to sell the program and create some enthusiasm for the next year.
